New weather maps reveal an unexpected drop in temperatures, signaling the end of the recent heatwave.
On Friday, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire recorded a high of 31.3C, while Usk, Monmouthshire reached 30.8C. The day remained sunny and dry, marking the continuation of the heatwave in the UK.
However, meteorologists predict a swift change in weather patterns, with a sudden 5C temperature drop expected as early as Sunday. This shift is attributed to a northern wind pushing colder air southward, displacing the lingering high pressure system towards mainland Europe. The previous heatwave was driven by a warm air mass known as the “Sahara plume” that had traveled from Africa and Europe to the UK.
The latest temperature projections from WXCHARTS, using MetDesk data, illustrate the cooling trend. Green shades on the maps indicate lower pressure areas, suggesting that Scotland and Northeast England will experience the most rapid temperature decline. The Met Office also confirms this shift, as reported by Express.co.uk.
This stark contrast in weather can be seen when compared to the soaring temperatures in parts of Spain and Italy, where temperatures are expected to reach 44C by Thursday.
In the UK, the Southwest of England will enjoy the best of the sunshine and warmth at the beginning of the week, although temperatures are unlikely to exceed 16C. This is a significant drop from the peak of 31.3C recorded in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, last Friday.
Furthermore, the Met Office has issued warnings of showers in the northern regions of the country, stating that there may be patchy rain as cloud cover increases.
According to MetDesk data, 35 counties are expected to experience temperatures below 10C in the upcoming days, starting from Sunday. These areas include Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
