“Labour Leader Vows to Scrap Digital ID Program”

Published on

Andy Burnham, in a pledge to refocus priorities if elected Prime Minister, has committed to eliminating the digital ID program. The newly appointed leader of the Labour party has promised to scrap the contentious scheme and reallocate funds to other areas.

Last September, Keir Starmer had announced the mandatory implementation of digital ID for proving the right to work in the UK by 2029, which faced significant opposition. A petition opposing the scheme garnered three million signatures, leading to a reevaluation of the plans.

Despite previous adjustments by ministers stating that the use of digital ID would not be obligatory, the program will now be entirely abandoned. A spokesperson for Mr. Burnham emphasized the government’s intention to redirect its focus towards addressing immediate needs, such as alleviating the cost of living, rather than pursuing a national ID initiative.

While employers will still be required to conduct right-to-work checks, they can carry out these verifications digitally. Labour insiders view this decision as an early indication of the new administration’s priorities, aiming to empower communities to address their specific needs.

Mr. Burnham is scheduled to deliver his inaugural address as Prime Minister on Monday, outlining plans to provide relief on living expenses and stimulate economic growth across the UK. The Home Affairs Committee had previously criticized the rushed implementation of digital ID plans without adequate policy development or public consultation.

Recent polling revealed that over half of UK citizens harbor concerns about potential government surveillance associated with digital ID usage. Deltapoll’s survey found that 61% of respondents were apprehensive about the monitoring of when and where digital IDs are utilized.
