A mother, Rebecca Lambert, is advocating for a change in organ donation laws in England to honor the wishes of potential donors. In the last recorded year, 842 deceased donors had registered to donate organs, but 10 to 12% of cases saw families declining consent, missing out on potentially saving 909 lives.
Rebecca’s campaign was fueled by her daughter Poppy’s urgent need for a heart transplant due to a congenital heart defect. Poppy underwent multiple surgeries, but a heart transplant became her only hope for survival. Rebecca and her husband Kevin are urging people to discuss organ donation with their families, highlighting the significant impact it can have on saving lives.
The current system allows families to veto a registered donor’s decision, which Becca finds undermines personal autonomy and results in missed opportunities for life-saving transplants. With nearly 5,000 people dying while waiting for a transplant in the past decade, the need for respecting donors’ wishes is crucial.
Rebecca’s initiative is supported by Terry Archbold, whose daughter also awaited a heart transplant. Terry emphasizes the importance of having conversations about organ donation with loved ones to ensure that wishes are respected. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign, initiated in 2020, brought the opt-out system for organ donation to England.
Organ donation is a sensitive topic, and while families are encouraged to honor the registered decisions of donors, there are instances where donation does not proceed due to various reasons. Recording one’s decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register is crucial, as it significantly increases the likelihood of donation proceeding and potentially saving up to nine lives.
