“Scottish Teen’s Brain Tumor Surgery Breakthrough”

Published on

A Scottish teenager recently underwent groundbreaking surgery for a brain tumor after initially experiencing pins and needles in his leg, initially mistaken for growing pains. Toby Peart, 13, from Strathpeffer, was among the first individuals in Scotland to undergo a sophisticated operation utilizing newly introduced technology.

In April 2025, Toby began feeling pins and needles and pain in his left leg, with symptoms worsening over several months. An MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital revealed a brain tumor, leading to a swift referral to a Glasgow medical facility for specialized care. At the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, a cutting-edge 3D exoscope technology was employed to enhance precision during complex brain surgery.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde proudly announced the installation of the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope, offering exceptional image quality, powerful illumination, and enhanced depth perception, a first in Scotland. Following further assessments confirming a non-cancerous tumor on the right side of Toby’s brain, measuring approximately 13–14mm, surgery was recommended. In November, Toby underwent successful surgery at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow using the 3D exoscope technology for enhanced precision.

Marc, Toby’s father, commended the medical team for their care during the innovative surgery. He described the challenging period as one of the most difficult for their family, emphasizing Toby’s quiet nature and the sudden realization of his health condition. Despite post-surgery risks like loss of sight or paralysis, Toby displayed remarkable progress, initially experiencing weakness and paralysis on his left side but later regaining movement and sensation.

Witnessing Toby’s recovery, Marc shared touching moments of his son’s improvement, culminating in Toby’s return home within a week post-surgery and a successful return to school in January. The family expressed gratitude for the support received and acknowledged the uniqueness of their journey. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde highlighted the benefits of the new technology, with consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane praising its role in safer and more effective surgeries, particularly for children, by providing enhanced visualization and improved outcomes.
