“From Hillsborough to Prime Minister: The Rise of Andy Burnham”

Published on

I first became acquainted with Andy Burnham during the Hillsborough tragedy’s 20th anniversary. At the time, I had recently given birth to my second child and was watching the Anfield memorial service from the hospital.

Initially, I was displeased that a politician was speaking at a memorial service. However, as the crowd on the Kop interrupted his speech with chants of “Justice,” I witnessed a shift in my feelings. Seeing the sincerity in Andy’s eyes transformed my initial disdain into empathy. My admiration for Andy solidified with the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s establishment and subsequent actions, leading to a friendship between us over the years.

Andy possesses numerous admirable qualities, including kindness, humility, understanding, accessibility, unwavering loyalty, and empathy. Yet, his remarkable calmness stands out the most. His invitation for me to join the “Hillsborough Law Now” initiative was met with immediate acceptance.

Throughout the negotiations for the Public Office Accountability Bill, there were moments of doubt and anxiety on my part. However, Andy consistently provided guidance, reassurance, and a steadfast belief in our success. He always maintained, “we will get there, one way or another.”

Hillsborough Law Now represents a diverse group of campaigners united by various injustices. Andy’s deep understanding of the trauma within these groups fuels his commitment to seeking justice and correcting wrongs. He approaches challenges with honesty, transparency, and a willingness to explain any limitations.

Witnessing Andy’s involvement in the final stages of the Public Office Accountability Bill, particularly during Keir Starmer’s concluding speech in the House of Commons, evoked deep emotions. Andy’s journey from the Bill’s inception to its culmination was a proud moment for me.

As Andy transitions into the role of Prime Minister, I have observed his calm demeanor in the face of newfound responsibilities. Despite his Everton football allegiance, which occasionally leads to light-hearted banter, his dedication to public service remains unwavering.

Andy’s recent appointment as the leader of the Labour Party was a moment of pride for many, including myself. As he embraces this new chapter in his political career, I wish him and his family continued success and have full confidence in his ability to lead with integrity and honor, just as he has always done.
