UK Workers Feel Pinch as Pay Inches Up Amid Cost of Living Crisis

Published on

Workers in the UK experienced a meager 0.4% increase in pay during the three months leading up to May, accounting for inflation, as confirmed by the Office for National Statistics. This uptick in real terms pay, up from 0.3% in the previous quarter, underscores the ongoing financial strain faced by many households.

Newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham unveiled plans to address the cost of living crisis on his first day in office, starting with the removal of VAT on electricity bills, which is expected to reduce average bills by £45. Despite a 3.4% rise in regular pay excluding bonuses before inflation in the same period, wage growth has notably slowed compared to the previous year.

While inflation has been decreasing concurrently, with the consumer price index at 2.8% in May, experts anticipate a drop to 2.6% in June. Susannah Streeter, Chief Investment Strategist at Wealth Club, warned of potential challenges ahead due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, likely impacting fuel, transport, and business costs.

Amid concerns about the job market, the UK’s unemployment rate remained steady at 4.9% in May, with 1.76 million people unemployed, and signs indicating a possible increase in the coming months. The number of job vacancies decreased slightly to 712,000, a modest decline from the previous quarter but higher than earlier in 2021.

The employment rate for individuals aged 16 to 64 was estimated at 75.1% in the March to May period, showing a slight decrease year-over-year but a marginal increase from the prior quarter. These developments come as financial markets anticipate at least two interest rate hikes, potentially impacting affordability and consumer behavior.
