A recent report highlights a 70% increase in bed blocking over the past five years, particularly affecting elderly individuals in hospitals. Data from Age UK reveals that in 2025/26, 57% of potentially dischargeable patients remained in hospitals. This situation has led to poignant stories, including one pensioner who had to discharge herself to a budget hotel due to the lack of available care options.

The number of individuals experiencing delayed discharge in England has risen to 14,000 per day, a 12% increase since June 2024 and a significant 70% surge since 2021. The social care crisis has exacerbated this issue, leaving many older adults stranded in hospitals, leading to detrimental effects on their health and independence.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, described delayed discharges as a “crisis hidden in plain sight,” emphasizing the negative impact on older individuals awaiting discharge. The report further illustrates the challenges faced by patients like Caroline Brown, who, after a hospital stay, found herself living in a budget hotel for five months due to limited care options.

The report estimates that delayed discharges are costing the NHS £230,000 monthly, amounting to £2.7 billion annually, with 6.75 million bed days lost each year. To address this pressing issue, the Mirror has launched the Fair Care for All campaign, advocating for improved social care services and better support for healthcare workers.

In response to these concerns, newly appointed Prime Minister Burnham has pledged to tackle the social care crisis. Efforts are being made to address delayed discharges through initiatives like the NHS’s discharge pathway model to ensure timely and safe patient transitions. However, the urgent need for social care reform remains a critical component in alleviating the strain on healthcare systems and improving patient outcomes.
