“Trump Faces Backlash for Boasting About Low US Casualties in Iran Conflict”

Published on

Donald Trump has drawn attention to the number of American casualties in the current conflict involving Iran and seemed to boast about the comparatively lower figure in comparison to past wars. The US president utilized Truth Social to outline the fatalities of US soldiers in the Vietnam, Korean, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars in his usual self-promoting manner.

In a post on the platform, Trump stated the death tolls as follows: Vietnam War – 58,220 deaths over 19 years, Korean War – 36,574 deaths over 3 years, Iraq War – 4,600 deaths over 9 years, and Afghanistan War – 2,000 deaths over 20 years. Referring to the Iran conflict as the “Iran Military Conflict,” he then mentioned that there were 18 American casualties.

The controversial post elicited criticism from various political figures who accused Trump of insensitively highlighting the 18 deaths while downplaying the impact of the conflict. Amidst the backlash, Trump also referenced what he called the “Venezuela War,” claiming it lasted one day with zero fatalities.

This statement by Trump came shortly after Iran attacked US bases in Jordan and Iraq, resulting in the deaths of four American service members and injuries to around 500 others, as reported by the Pentagon. Since the onset of the war on February 28, more than 3,400 individuals have lost their lives in Iran, including 1,568 civilians and at least 236 children, according to Reuters citing the US-based human rights group HRANA, although these figures were not independently verified.

Reacting to Trump’s post, several politicians voiced their disapproval, with former Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticizing Trump for seemingly boasting about the 18 deaths. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trump’s lack of respect for American soldiers, while Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado Democrats expressed concern over Trump’s attitude towards the fallen service members.

Trump disclosed his intention to visit Dover Air Force Base to attend the dignified transfer of the four soldiers killed in the recent attacks by Iran in the Middle East. He emphasized the sacrifices made by these soldiers in preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, stating that the US was retaliating against Iran in honor of the deceased troops.
