While struggling Britons fight to make ends meet, over 100 of the country’s wealthiest citizens are making an extraordinary plea today: urging the government to increase their taxes.

In a collective effort, these millionaires have written to Andy Burnham with a direct message that challenges the long-standing excuses politicians have used to avoid tax reform.

This call to action does not come from those on the front lines of financial hardship – the underpaid care worker, the pensioner cutting back on heating, or the family relying on food handouts. Instead, it stems from the millionaires who passively accumulate wealth while many toil just to survive.

Implementing a two percent tax on wealth exceeding £10 million could generate £24 billion, and aligning capital gains tax with income tax could bring in an additional £12 billion.

These figures are not arbitrary; they represent money that is sitting idle, growing, and multiplying in the bank accounts of individuals who have acknowledged that they possess more than they truly need.

The combined wealth of these individuals now accounts for over a fifth of the entire country’s GDP, marking a fivefold increase since 1990. Meanwhile, the average life expectancy in the UK has dropped by two years in the last decade, now standing at under 61.

Despite being the world’s sixth-largest economy, the UK ranks second to last among developed countries in terms of healthy life years.

The juxtaposition of premature deaths in a country flooded with millionaire and billionaire wealth is not a coincidence; it is a pressing issue that requires immediate political attention. The current state of affairs in the UK is sobering, with the median household income at £38,900, falling significantly short of the £88,000 needed for a family of four to live comfortably outside of London.

As a result, most households are left with less than half the income required for genuine financial security, not for luxury but merely to cover basic expenses, handle unforeseen costs, and approach the future without trepidation.

The sheer magnitude of individual wealth has disconnected itself from real-world human needs. The question arises: how much wealth does one person truly require?

By advocating for higher taxes on vast fortunes and channeling the funds into public services, individuals like Mr. Lineker and his supporters are demonstrating more courage and compassion than many politicians exhibit in a lifetime.
