Man Deliberately Crashes into Police Car in Deception Scheme

Published on

In a peculiar turn of events, recent footage captures a man intentionally crashing into a police car in an attempt to deceive authorities and have his vehicle declared totaled. Nathan Owen, 33, rammed into a police car 31 times after falsely reporting an emergency situation involving his Jaguar vehicle accelerating uncontrollably, as revealed in Liverpool Crown Court proceedings.

During the incident on March 6, 2024, Owen reached speeds of up to 86mph on the M58, M57, and M62 highways in Merseyside, covering a distance of approximately 38 miles over a span of around 35 minutes. This triggered a significant law enforcement response, with officers attempting to halt what they believed was a rogue vehicle. Subsequent investigations, however, exposed that Owen had manipulated the situation, maintaining full control of the car the entire time.

Following his plea of guilty to charges of dangerous driving and two counts of fraud, Owen received a sentence of four years and three months in prison. Judge Ian Unsworth KC condemned Owen’s actions, emphasizing the chaos and danger his hoax caused to the public and authorities. He highlighted the risk faced by police officers who responded to what they believed was a legitimate emergency.

Prosecutor Eric Lamb revealed that Owen, from Prestatyn, North Wales, had faced financial troubles, owing money on his Jaguar I-Pace to CA Auto Finance. Seeking a way out, Owen resorted to fabricating the emergency scenario to dispose of the vehicle. The incident led to the closure of motorways, and Owen even capitalized on the fabricated story by selling it to publications for money.

In defense, Daniel Travers characterized Owen’s behavior as recklessly foolish, attributing it to misguided ambitions. Despite lacking a criminal record and coming from a stable background, Owen’s actions were deemed severely misguided. Following his ban from driving for five years post-release, detectives confirmed that Owen had deliberately endangered lives during the incident.

Merseyside Police’s Detective Constable Michael Doyle expressed concerns over the safety risks posed by Owen’s actions, emphasizing the reckless endangerment of workers and other motorists on the road. Despite a charge of causing a public nuisance remaining on file, the consequences of Owen’s deceitful and dangerous actions have left a lasting impact on the community and law enforcement.
