Mexican TikTok Star Fatally Shot on Live Stream

A prominent social media figure from Mexico met a tragic end as he was fatally shot during a live broadcast on a street in the daytime. Cesar Gastelum, known for his comedic content on TikTok with a substantial following of 600,000 users, was streaming live outside a fast-food establishment in Culiacan, a city in the northwest, when the incident occurred.

In a disturbing turn of events, two individuals on a motorbike, both masked with helmets, approached Gastelum and his companions and unleashed gunfire. Shockingly, the rider of the motorcycle was seen aiming a weapon directly at Gastelum’s head in the livestream recording.

Culiacán, located in the heart of Sinaloa, Mexico, is a hotspot for drug cartel operations, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel, where internal conflicts have led to a surge in violence. A security official in Sinaloa state confirmed Gastelum’s tragic demise and mentioned the initiation of a significant security operation in response.

The region witnessed heightened tension following the abduction of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in 2024 by a son of former cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. With Zambada handed over to US authorities, internal strife ensued within the cartel, pitting Zambada’s faction against Guzmán’s sons.

The situation escalated to a point where the US President, Donald Trump, classified the Sinaloa Cartel, among others, as a foreign terrorist organization. The killing of Cesar Gastelum, the social media influencer, mirrors the tragic fate of Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Marquez in 2025, who was also gunned down during a TikTok livestream in Jalisco.

Marquez, aged 23, was fatally shot by an assailant who entered her workplace, a salon in Zapopan. In a recent development, Mexican authorities apprehended Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” in Jalisco, identified as the leader of a criminal group associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Alvarez Ayala has been linked to the murder of Marquez and accused of orchestrating the killing of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025. The series of violent events underscore the ongoing challenges posed by criminal organizations in Mexico.
