A devastated family has seen their permanent residence in the mountainous regions of Greece destroyed by wildfires just days before they were set to move from the UK. Rory Clifford, 36, and Stephanie Harper, 35, had invested all their savings and income into constructing their dream home in Peloponnese, South Greece. They had relocated all their precious possessions in anticipation of their upcoming relocation.
The couple had planned for their twin daughters, eight-year-old Evangeline and Ivaria, to start school in Greece in September. Additionally, they have a 19-month-old daughter named Athena. Tragically, recent wildfires in Greece ravaged their home and all its contents.
Stephanie, who is pregnant with twins, shared her heartbreak, expressing how the situation has completely disrupted their lives. She described the immense loss and sorrow they are experiencing after seeing their hard work and dreams vanish in an instant.
The destruction of their property, acquired in 2023, has forced them to reside in a one-bedroom flat in Hastings, East Sussex, a stark contrast to the envisioned life they had prepared for. The family had invested over €300,000 (about £257,000) to create a family-friendly environment in the sun, including accommodations for their three rescue dogs.
Stephanie explained that the funds for their relocation were a result of their joint efforts running a designer furniture business, along with savings and loans. They had sold everything they owned to facilitate the move, which had been a long-term aspiration involving substantial financial commitments.
Despite facing numerous challenges and unexpected expenses during the relocation process, the couple remained determined. However, the devastating wildfire has left them in a position where they need to start anew.
In response to their plight, Stephanie’s sister initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the family in rebuilding their lives. Stephanie expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received, stating that despite having insurance, they require approximately €100,000 (£85,000) to recover from the setback.
The couple emphasized that their desire to rebuild is not driven by materialistic motives but by their dedication to provide a better life for their children. They recounted the sacrifices they made and the anticipation of living in a place they had worked so hard to create.
