Reflecting on her illustrious career, which includes starring in iconic films like Sister Act and Ghost, Whoopi, 70, shared that she almost lost the opportunity to be part of these projects.

During a recent podcast with Keke Palmer, Whoopi revealed that she was surprised not to be considered for the role in the 1990 film Ghost, as she discovered that numerous Black actresses were auditioning for the part. Upon inquiring about her exclusion from the casting process, she was informed that her team had suggested her but the casting directors believed she would detract from the movie’s appeal.

Despite this setback, Whoopi eventually landed the role in Ghost alongside Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, who supported her casting. Her portrayal of Oda Mae Brown earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Similarly, Whoopi disclosed that her role in Sister Act was not initially intended for her. The character was originally written for Bette Midler, who declined the role citing concerns about her fans’ expectations. However, Whoopi’s willingness to take on rejected roles proved to be a pivotal move in her career trajectory.
