A man has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 35 years, for shooting his lodger and concealing the body in a barrel filled with concrete. Christopher Wright, aged 73, was found guilty of murdering and dismembering Richard Dyson, 55, after maintaining a six-year cover-up.
Richard Dyson went missing in November 2019 while residing on land owned by Wright, a former butcher, in Barnsley. His disappearance was reported by his daughter, sparking a police investigation. Six years later, police discovered Dyson’s dismembered remains inside a barrel filled with concrete on a nearby farm.
Wright’s childhood friend, Karl Schwalbe, aged 72, was also convicted for his role in obstructing justice by aiding Wright in concealing the crime. Schwalbe received a three-year prison sentence for his involvement.
During the trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Mr. Justice Cotter stated that Wright would likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. The judge remarked on Wright’s gruesome act, highlighting his butcher background as enabling him to commit such a horrific crime.
In a statement, Dyson’s daughter, Bethany Dainty, expressed the anguish of not knowing the truth about her father’s fate for an extended period. She struggled to grieve due to the uncertainty surrounding Dyson’s disappearance.
Notably, Wright and Schwalbe were captured on camera discussing evidence gathered by police during the investigation. Additionally, Wright was filmed praying for absolution and the concealment of his weapons while authorities searched his property.
Evidence presented during the trial linked Wright’s firearms collection to the weapon and ammunition used to kill Dyson. Covert recordings of conversations between Wright and Schwalbe further implicated Schwalbe in the cover-up.
In the end, Wright was convicted of multiple charges, including murder, preventing a lawful burial, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, and firearms offenses. Schwalbe was convicted solely of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Commenting on the case, Jamie Barton, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, commended the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the prosecution in uncovering the truth and securing accountability for Dyson’s death and the subsequent cover-up.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles emphasized the impact of the tragedy on Dyson’s family, expressing solidarity with them. He acknowledged the strength displayed by Dyson’s loved ones throughout the investigation and trial, hoping that the verdict would provide some closure and aid in the healing process for the grieving family.
