Ukraine’s defense sector is collaborating with European firms to create a new missile system as a replacement for the US Patriot missile, designed to counter Russia’s ballistic threat. Amid concerns over delays in receiving Patriot missiles, Ukraine’s President suggested that such delays could be intentional to weaken Ukraine during future peace negotiations. Recent ballistic attacks by Kremlin forces in Ukraine resulted in at least 13 casualties, while Ukraine retaliated with deep-strike drone assaults on Russia’s energy sector.
Fire Point, a drone and missile manufacturer in Kyiv, has reached agreements with twelve European defense companies to provide radar and guidance systems for the Freyja missile project. Launched in Paris last month with the participation of ten governments and twelve defense industry giants, including Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales, and SAAB, this pan-European initiative aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Ukraine currently relies on US-made Patriot missiles to intercept ballistic threats from Russia; however, global shortages of these missiles, exacerbated by conflicts in Iran, have left Ukraine vulnerable. Recent attacks in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 17 individuals from missile and drone strikes, with an additional 13 casualties reported the following day. Ukrainian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the urgency of receiving necessary support from European and US partners to safeguard lives in Ukraine.
Noting a significant decrease in air defense missile supplies compared to the previous year, President Zelensky highlighted the critical role of ballistic interceptors in preventing casualties. He urged international partners to expedite the delivery of anti-ballistic systems to avert further devastation.
Firepoint’s CEO, Iryna Terekh, expressed optimism about the progress of the new missile project, emphasizing the advanced stage of development involving surveillance radars and tracking systems. The company aims to accelerate the project timeline and reduce the missile cost to approximately £800,000 each, significantly lower than the price of a Patriot missile. The European-Ukrainian interceptor missile has reportedly undergone five successful tests.
