A mother endured months of trauma after giving birth at a maternity unit embroiled in a scandal. Morgan Joins, aged 28, underwent a caesarean section to deliver her son Jensen due to complications from her previous labor. Following Jensen’s birth at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital, he required immediate care in the high dependency unit. While in the maternity ward, Morgan overheard a nurse insinuating that Jensen’s condition was a result of her choice for a surgical birth, causing her immense distress and guilt.

Expressing her anguish, Morgan shared her experience in light of the health secretary’s pledge to reform NHS maternity care. The health secretary aims to establish national care standards, address racial disparities for Black and Asian women, and implement measures to detect performance issues before they escalate into major scandals.

Despite welcoming the proposed changes, Morgan expressed skepticism about the readiness of maternity staff to embrace a cultural shift. She highlighted the influence of individual opinions and beliefs within the healthcare system, particularly regarding caesarean sections being viewed as an “easy way out.” The John Radcliffe Hospital, where Morgan delivered her children, has faced scrutiny for preventable baby deaths and systemic deficiencies.

An independent review at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust revealed numerous cases of avoidable harm or fatalities due to systemic failures. Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, where Morgan gave birth, was contacted for comment on the matter.
