An iconic amusement park attraction has permanently closed its doors after providing excitement to visitors for three decades.

Kumba, a formerly record-breaking roller coaster in Florida, ceased operation on August 2 at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Originally introduced as an additional feature to the Busch Brewery site, the ride opened to the public in 1993 boasting the world’s tallest vertical loop at 114 feet. It held the titles for the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster in Florida at that time, but these distinctions have since been surpassed by newer roller coasters.

Featuring a 135-foot drop, a dive loop, a zero-g roll, a cobra roll, and a pair of interlocking corkscrews, Kumba gained popularity among thrill-seekers, positioning the theme park in competition with Disney and Universal.

While initially adored by fans, the ride lost some of its appeal over the years as more advanced roller coasters were introduced. Busch Gardens had announced earlier in the year that Kumba would be closing after its 33rd anniversary.

In a social media tribute, Busch Gardens reminisced about Kumba’s impact, highlighting its debut in 1993 as a trailblazing thrill ride in Florida. The park expressed gratitude for Kumba’s legacy, acknowledging its significant features and the memorable experiences it provided to guests.

The statement also revealed plans for a successor roller coaster called Kumba’s Revenge, set to launch after the closure of the original ride. This new attraction is part of a substantial investment aimed at enhancing the park’s thrill offerings and guest experience, signaling a new era of excitement at Busch Gardens.
