“RCN Exposes Abuse of Migrant Care Workers, Calls for Reforms”

Published on

A report has uncovered distressing incidents of mistreatment, discrimination, and financial abuse towards migrant care workers, prompting calls for action from Andy Burnham to address these issues. Nursing leaders have raised concerns about employers exploiting the visa system to coerce workers into unreasonable repayments, withhold wages, and foster a toxic work environment. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has urged for reforms in the visa system to protect workers and prevent exploitation.

The RCN’s report highlighted cases where care workers were pressured to pay exorbitant sums, such as £25,000, to terminate their contracts prematurely. This exploitation, including bullying and discrimination, has raised alarms within the healthcare sector. Professor Nicola Ranger, General Secretary of the RCN, emphasized the need for a National Care Service led by registered nurses to ensure quality care and address these systemic issues.

The visa sponsorship system, which ties workers to specific employers, was identified as a major factor contributing to the abuse of migrant workers. The RCN revealed that 197 cases involved repayment clauses exceeding £3,000, with instances of pay discrepancies and contract modifications to the detriment of employees. Moreover, cases of severe bullying, harassment, and racist discrimination were reported, underscoring the urgent need for reform.

Efforts to establish a new oversight body for visa administration, enhance worker protections, and extend the timeframe for job transitions are being advocated by the RCN. Andy Burnham has expressed gratitude towards overseas care workers and hinted at potential exemptions for them in upcoming migration reforms. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to combatting labor exploitation and ensuring the integrity of the immigration system against rogue employers.
