Growing up in the Philippines, my exposure to hockey was limited to photos until I moved to Canada. The moment that truly captivated me was the 2010 Winter Olympics final when Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal secured victory for Canada against the U.S. Witnessing the nation’s jubilation post-win, with people singing “O Canada” everywhere, left a lasting impact on me.
Transitioning into my new life in Canada, hockey unexpectedly became a significant part of it. Attending my first live game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks, was a turning point. The energy in the arena and the camaraderie among fans hooked me into the sport.
As I settled into Edmonton, I realized the profound influence of hockey on the city’s culture. Co-workers donning Oilers’ jerseys and the intensity of the “Battle of Alberta” rivalry shed light on the sport’s deep-rooted significance in Canadian society. Wayne Gretzky Drive, a street name that intrigued me, led me to discover the legendary player’s impact on the game.
Gradually, I found myself immersed in the hockey world, eagerly following games and events like the Battle of Alberta. Displaying Oilers’ towels in my kitchen became a small testament to my growing passion for the sport. The sense of belonging that hockey provided me with in my new country was invaluable.
Moving to Vancouver in 2016, I encountered a fellow hockey enthusiast, Mike, who reignited my love for the game. Our shared passion for hockey brought us closer, making Saturday night hockey and nachos a cherished tradition. Embracing each other’s differences, we found joy in our diverse backgrounds and interests, blending our love for tennis with hockey fandom.
Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a shared experience, where we proudly sported Canucks and Oilers jerseys, symbolizing our unity despite supporting rival teams. This journey from a casual observer during the 2010 Olympics to an ardent hockey fan today has been a testament to the sport’s ability to unite, spark conversations, and foster relationships.
