“Trump Backs FIFA President Infantino Amid Controversy”

Published on

U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced strong support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging that he remains at the helm of the global soccer organization. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership, citing the success of the recently concluded World Cup as a testament to his capabilities. The President emphasized that removing Infantino would be a significant error, stating that future events under new leadership would not achieve the same level of success and profitability.

Trump’s endorsement comes following a joint statement from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF criticizing Infantino’s handling of a proposed sale of World Cup commercial rights. The statement raised concerns about Infantino’s conduct and called for an independent review of the situation, emphasizing the importance of leadership that prioritizes the interests of football and promotes unity within the sport.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed doubts about Infantino’s leadership in light of recent events, underscoring the growing discontent within the football community. Infantino has faced backlash over a failed plan to sell a portion of the World Cup’s commercial rights, a move that sparked controversy and led to calls for his resignation.

Despite the mounting pressure, Infantino has received backing from some factions within FIFA, including Africa’s CAF and select South American countries. However, opposition to his leadership remains strong, with calls for his immediate resignation gaining traction among certain federations. The ongoing debate surrounding Infantino’s tenure has highlighted divisions within the football world, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in governing bodies.
