A woman from Nova Scotia expressed regret for contacting the RCMP to report a reckless driver, as it led to a confusing incident where an officer entered her home without her knowledge. Robin MacDougall was driving to Port Hawkesbury from Antigonish when she noticed a vehicle swerving and driving erratically on Highway 104. After calling 911, the dispatcher instructed her to call again if she or the erratic driver left the highway. MacDougall made a second call before reaching her destination and informed the dispatcher that the erratic driver was heading towards Cape Breton.

Later, while having lunch with her parents, MacDougall received a call from an RCMP officer who mentioned that there was a misunderstanding, and they had been inside her home. MacDougall was puzzled about how the situation escalated from the highway to her residence in the opposite direction. She and her partner had never locked their back door, which allowed the officer to enter the house.

Feeling her privacy was violated, MacDougall was unsure how to handle similar situations in the future. However, the head of the RCMP detachment in Antigonish, Staff Sgt. Kimberly Hillier, defended the officers’ actions, stating that they were responding to a disconnected call from MacDougall. According to Hillier, two separate incidents were being investigated by different officers who were focused on ensuring someone’s safety rather than searching for an impaired driver.

There was a dispute between MacDougall and Hillier regarding the dropped call, with Hillier citing poor cell coverage in the area as a possible reason for the confusion. MacDougall maintained that her calls were not disconnected and provided evidence from her cellular provider showing no third call made to the RCMP. Despite the differing accounts, the RCMP emphasized their duty to investigate potential emergencies following a dropped 911 call, as outlined by the Supreme Court of Canada.
