A housing project designed for vulnerable seniors in Moncton is nearing completion, with new residents expected to start moving in by the end of the upcoming month. The development, situated at the intersection of St. George Boulevard and Bessborough Avenue in Moncton’s west end, is transforming a former office building into residential units.

Led by the City of Moncton and Rising Tide Community Initiatives Inc., a non-profit organization supporting affordable housing in the city, the project involves the conversion of the former Wawanesa Insurance building, which Rising Tide acquired in early 2025. Officials from Rising Tide, alongside representatives from various government levels, provided an update on the development during a recent announcement.

Rising Tide’s president, Dale Hicks, described the project as their most significant endeavor to date. The complex will feature 30 one-bedroom units, aiming to address the demand for affordable housing among seniors on the Housing N.B. waitlist. Additionally, a primary care clinic will be located on the ground floor of the building.

With plans to welcome the initial tenants within approximately a month, Hicks emphasized the importance of the medical clinic component in enhancing resident welfare. Housing Minister David Hickey noted the pressing need for affordable housing, citing a waitlist of 4,000 individuals in Moncton.

Funded by contributions from all three government levels totaling around $10 million, the project received $2.4 million from the provincial government’s Affordable Rental Housing Program, which focuses on offering units at or below market rates. The federal government and the Moncton municipal government also provided significant financial support for the initiative.
