Hamilton police have announced the arrest and charging of a 26-year-old individual with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Zenin Roussel, 21, on August 9. Kyle Dumont-McArthur, a resident of Hamilton, was apprehended on Tuesday and later appeared in court on Wednesday morning, as revealed by Det. Sgt. Lisa Chambers during a news briefing at the downtown police station.

Following the discovery of Roussel near Main and Frid streets by a taxi driver around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, he was rushed to the hospital by first responders but succumbed to his injuries, Chambers disclosed. The altercation between the two men occurred on King Street W. following their departure from a billiards and sports bar in Westdale, characterized as a “verbal fight” by Chambers, who noted that the reason for the dispute remains unknown.

Although Roussel and Dumont-McArthur parted ways after the initial confrontation, they unexpectedly encountered each other again approximately 10 minutes later near Main and Frid streets. Chambers clarified that the area where the incident took place is situated west of the bustling Main and Dundurn intersection, adjacent to a highway off-ramp and in proximity to a business park.

In addition to the suspect’s presence, four other witnesses observed the stabbing, all of whom have been interviewed by the police, Chambers confirmed. She expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation in the investigation and clarified that there is no indication of Dumont-McArthur deliberately following Roussel during their second encounter.

Hamilton Police Service has reported a total of eight homicides this year, with five of the victims being young men, including Roussel. Chambers emphasized the unacceptable nature of violence and lamented the tragic loss of life, urging anyone with relevant information or footage of the incident to come forward.
