A long-time resident of Nepean, Aroha DeForest, has been residing in her home since the 1990s. She purchased sandbags following a flood incident in 2023 and has since kept them as a permanent feature in her laneway, especially after a severe rainstorm on Canada Day. DeForest expressed that like many residents in the west end of Ottawa, she feels anxious whenever there is a forecast of extreme weather events like tornadoes or heavy rainfall.

Recent heavy rainfall on Monday, totaling 23.5 millimetres, led to renewed flooding in parts of the city, causing distress among residents who had already experienced flooding just over a month ago. DeForest mentioned that the situation has put everyone on edge, making them reluctant to leave their homes in fear of a repeat incident.

DeForest revealed that she and her neighbors have been taking precautions by avoiding simultaneous absences from their homes, ensuring that someone is always available to monitor the situation. The uncertainty of whether the rainfall might affect their homes or their neighbors’ residences has added to their anxiety.

In a separate statement, City officials highlighted the College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards as the most severely impacted areas during the July 1 flooding. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine, after meeting with affected residents, emphasized the need for increased support and acknowledged that many households are still struggling from the aftermath of the flooding.

The City has initiated an investigation into its response to the Canada Day storm and is exploring ways to enhance its readiness for future extreme weather occurrences. Devine stressed the importance of addressing critical questions about the level of investment and sacrifices required, emphasizing the urgency given the rapid pace of climate change.

Another Nepean resident, Wesley Bova, shared concerns about the recent storm’s impact, although it was not as severe as the previous deluge on Canada Day. Bova expressed apprehension about the possibility of a similar catastrophic event occurring again, given the lingering fear and trauma from the prior flooding. The family remains vigilant and prepared, anticipating the need to safeguard their belongings in case of another flooding event.
