After the largest union in Yukon was placed under trusteeship, representatives from its parent union organized a virtual town hall for members to provide clarification and address queries. The newly appointed trustee and administrator, Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward, both hail from the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) parent organization, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

The PSAC assumed control of YEU recently, suspending the union’s bylaws and removing the president, vice-president, and directors from their positions. Spirito emphasized that the decision for trusteeship was carefully considered and not due to financial concerns or mismanagement of funds.

Aylward, whose salary is supported by YEU, explained that his role is funded by PSAC. He mentioned facing challenges in making progress due to internal obstacles within the executive team, leading to the recommendation for trusteeship.

Despite some members questioning the need for trusteeship, Spirito highlighted the importance of representation in the upcoming leadership convention. She stressed the significance of ensuring adequate delegate submissions and addressing vacant seats for a successful democratic process.

Spirito underlined the continuation of town hall meetings throughout the trusteeship to engage members and provide insights into corrective actions being implemented. She assured members that bargaining efforts would persist without hindrance, emphasizing the commitment of both YEU and PSAC to securing a favorable deal for union members.
