Amidst the rural landscapes of Saskatchewan, a bustling farm known as Farm in the Dell is a hive of activity. Nestled along a gravel road, this farm features two houses, a red barn, a shop, a mess hall, and a greenhouse where individuals with intellectual disabilities are actively engaged in various tasks.
On a warm August day, residents can be seen immersed in gardening activities. Women are busy picking beans while a group of men tends to the corn and potato plants. Lynne Cammidge, a 52-year-old resident, expresses her contentment at Farm in the Dell, describing it as a peaceful and beautiful place that she cherishes. Cammidge was among the initial clients to transition to this rural group home 15 years ago.
Farm in the Dell, a non-profit organization situated approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon near Aberdeen, offers individuals with intellectual disabilities meaningful work opportunities and a countryside lifestyle. Shauna Dollansky, the site manager in Aberdeen, emphasizes the residents’ capability in tasks such as weeding and watering, highlighting the pride they take in caring for their living environment.
Many residents have a background rooted in farm life or rural settings, seeking a sense of purpose and a connection to the land. The concept of Farm in the Dell originated in the United States, with its first farm established in Montana in 1986. Presently, it operates internationally with locations in the U.S., Saskatchewan, Mexico, and Kyrgyzstan.
The Aberdeen facility was established in 2010, housing seventeen clients across two houses and employing around 40 staff members in full-time and part-time roles. Financial support comes from the Ministry of Social Services through Community Living Service Development. Lynette Zacharias, the executive director, emphasizes the importance of providing a sense of community and family for individuals with intellectual disabilities, combating feelings of isolation.
Residents participate in community outings and local events, fostering social connections and engagement. The center also accommodates clients from Saskatoon and surrounding areas for day programs. Aaron Peters, a young resident, expresses his enthusiasm for the farm activities and the positive impact it has had on his life.
The farm hosts a variety of animals, and residents actively engage in caring for them, collecting eggs, and tending to the garden. Meals prepared on the farm incorporate fresh produce and eggs harvested on-site. The success of Farm in the Dell in Aberdeen led to the establishment of a second group home in Biggar, supported by community donations and local funding.
Looking ahead, Zacharias envisions expanding the Farm in the Dell model to more communities, recognizing the significant need for such supportive environments. The organization relies on annual funding from the Ministry of Social Services to sustain its operations. The province is also investing in the construction of new group homes to cater to individuals with intellectual disabilities and higher medical support needs, aiming to enhance support services across various communities.
