Wildfires in British Columbia’s Okanagan region are impacting tourism in the Columbia Valley, even though the area is relatively distant from the fires. Jessica Fairhart, who leads the Columbia Valley Tourism Marketing Society, mentions that the provincewide state of emergency has influenced some travelers’ decisions. The Columbia Valley, encompassing communities like Radium Hot Springs, Invermere, and Fairmont Hot Springs, is approximately 300 kilometers away from the wildfires in the Okanagan.
Despite the wildfires, Radium Hot Springs Mayor Mike Gray reassures that the community is not under immediate threat, and local businesses, hotels, and attractions are operating as usual. Amber Roy, the proprietor of Wilder Lodge in Fairmont Hot Springs, notes a decline in August bookings following strong July reservations. Concerned out-of-province guests, who may have misconceptions about the fire’s proximity, have been inquiring about conditions before visiting.
Roy emphasizes that the wildfires’ impact is localized and not affecting all of B.C. She dismisses worries about tourists displacing evacuees from accommodations in her area. Fairhart reports that other businesses in the region are also receiving calls from anxious tourists, leading to a slight decrease in visitor numbers in recent weeks.
While Roy’s hotel has not observed an increase in bookings for the remainder of August, she remains hopeful for last-minute reservations. More visitors would aid her business in recovering from a wildfire-related power outage during the typically busy August long weekend. The Columbia Valley, though far from the major wildfires, has experienced intermittent heavy smoke this summer, further raising concerns among tourists.
Fairhart advises potential visitors to stay informed about current wildfire and smoke conditions before embarking on their trips to the Columbia Valley. Despite the challenges, Fairhart notes a positive trend in bookings for the end of August and September, suggesting a potential rebound for the local tourism industry.
