Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current season in the Saudi Pro League may mark the conclusion of his illustrious professional football career. At 41 years old, the iconic player’s contract with Al-Nassr in Riyadh, inked in December 2022, is set to expire next June, with little likelihood of a renewal.
In an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo expressed, “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.” The Portuguese forward, known for his 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
Looking ahead, Ronaldo shared, “I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.” He highlighted his plans to engage in different activities like traveling more, enjoying padel, and relishing the fruits of his labor over the past 25 years.
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year in the professional realm. Throughout his career, he has clinched five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. Notably, Ronaldo’s stellar performance last season, where he scored 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to victory in Saudi Arabia, securing his first trophy since joining the club in Riyadh and the club’s first league title since 2019.
Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s initial title defense match, observing from the sidelines as the team secured a 3-0 win over Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou praised Ronaldo’s continual support, stating, “Cristiano is here today, and he is always present with us.” Ronaldo is anticipated to return to action against Al-Diriyah in the King’s Cup on Tuesday.
Ronaldo’s reflections on potential retirement coincided with Lionel Messi’s recent sentiments about considering stepping away from the sport following his father’s passing. Messi, at 39 years old, expressed uncertainty about his future in football, stating, “I used to just play football, and now I’m really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.”
