Hakainde Hichilema Wins Second Term in Zambia

Published on

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema secured a second consecutive 5-year term, facing unexpectedly strong competition from the opposition leader amid public discontent over ongoing challenges despite economic improvements. The election commission announced that Hichilema garnered around 60% of valid votes, with his main rival, Brian Mundubile, receiving approximately 38%. Commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis officially declared Hichilema as the president-elect of Zambia on August 18, 2026.

This marked Hichilema’s seventh presidential bid, benefiting from the advantages of incumbency and a strong economic platform stemming from his handling of the pandemic-induced debt crisis in 2021. His opponent, Mundubile, made his first attempt at the presidency. Zambia, known for its copper resources and strategic minerals, has been a focal point in the competition between China and the United States.

Following a relatively calm pre-election period, tensions escalated around the August 13 vote. International observers, including the European Union, noted that while the election was mostly peaceful, certain factors restricted fundamental freedoms during the broader electoral process. Incidents such as late legal modifications, uncertainties, and uneven campaign conditions were highlighted by Michael McNamara, head of the EU observation mission.

On election night, 11 individuals, including key opposition figures, were arrested in a raid involving gunfire, coinciding with Mundubile’s presence. The electoral commission temporarily halted vote counting the next day due to reports of violence against polling staff and the theft of ballot papers. Allegations of result tampering surfaced, prompting Mundubile to call for an independent investigation, countered by denials from Hichilema’s camp.

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed worry over the army’s involvement in the vote tallying process, emphasizing that maintaining order during elections falls under the Zambia Police Service’s jurisdiction. Despite potential legal challenges from the opposition, success seems unlikely, according to Greg Musiker, a Zambia analyst at Signal Risk. While isolated political unrest may occur, widespread turmoil is not anticipated in the days ahead.
