The annual general assembly of the Gwich’in Tribal Council has been delayed, as announced in a recent press release. The council cited the need for additional time to finalize certain financial documents as the reason for the postponement. Originally scheduled to commence next Wednesday in Fort McPherson, new dates for the assembly and instructions on how to participate will be communicated at a later time.
The decision to postpone the assembly was made after careful consideration due to the significant business matters typically addressed during such meetings. This delay echoes past instances where financial issues were encountered at council gatherings.
During the previous year’s assembly, the council disclosed that audited financial statements would not be released, a customary practice at these annual events. Delays in receiving financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a subsidiary wholly owned by the tribal council, were highlighted as the primary cause for the financial reporting setbacks. The council referenced challenges with the GDC that hindered the completion of its audit statements.
