“American Citizen Defies Extremist Settlers in West Bank”

Published on

The recent incursion of Palestinian residences by extremist Israeli settlers in the town of Qusra in the occupied West Bank is not an isolated event. However, the American citizenship of one of the Palestinian homeowners has garnered more media attention compared to the frequent aggressive actions by hardline Jewish settlers attempting to displace Palestinians from their land.

Loui Ridi, a businessman from Ohio, returned to Qusra on August 17 to defend his home, where his brother and nephew reside, as settlers surrounded it along with two neighboring houses. Ridi expressed his concern for his family’s safety and the pressure to leave, fearing that vacating the property would result in settlers claiming it.

Highlighting the escalating settler aggression, Ridi mentioned a recent incident in a neighboring village where settlers enforced a siege on a family, eventually forcing them out of their residence. The expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank is considered unlawful by international standards, a trend that has intensified under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership and his nationalist coalition, which critics accuse of indirectly endorsing settler violence.

Upon his return to Qusra, Ridi displayed an American flag on his building and reached out to the U.S. Embassy for support. The village of Qusra, located approximately 16 kilometers south of Nablus, is encompassed by settlement clusters like Migdalim and Shilo, along with numerous outposts inhabited by radical settlers.

Instances of settler attacks causing harm or property destruction have surged this year, averaging about six incidents daily, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs – marking a record high. The violence in Qusra prompted a condemnation from U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who labeled those responsible as “Israeli terrorists,” denouncing their actions as criminal and deplorable.

Huckabee, a staunch advocate of Israel’s settlement policies and Jewish historical ties to the land, has downplayed violent settlers as a minority. Critics assert that this overlooks the systematic annexation of the West Bank through violent means, facilitated by the military apparatus.

Efforts to restore order in Qusra involved the deployment of Israeli border police and IDF units to disperse settlers blockading Palestinian homes. Ridi recounted IDF soldiers designating the vicinity of his residence as a closed military area, urging him to remain indoors while allowing a settler to intimidate him on his property.

The ongoing unrest in Qusra has blurred the distinction between soldiers and settlers for Palestinians, reflecting a perceived collusion between the IDF and settlers. The inability to permanently remove the settlers has fueled Palestinian suspicions that the IDF enables Israel’s settlement endeavors rather than safeguarding their interests.

The escalation of violence targeting the outskirts of Palestinian communities indicates a deliberate strategy to confine Palestinians to smaller areas and facilitate the linkage of settlement blocs and outposts across the West Bank. This tactic is not confined to Qusra but is observed in numerous Palestinian villages throughout the region, reflecting a broader trend of settlement expansion.

International condemnation of Israel’s construction tenders for a new settlement near East Jerusalem, known as E1, further underscores concerns about jeopardizing the two-state solution and undermining the territorial integrity of the Palestinian Territories.
