“White House Imposes Bans and Tariffs in Trade Conflict”

Published on

The recent move by the White House in the ongoing trade conflict between Canada and the U.S. saw a ban on the import of Canadian dairy, motorcycles, and certain alcohol products. Additionally, a fresh wave of 50 percent tariffs was imposed on a variety of other goods. Economists suggest that while the impact on the Canadian economy may not be significant in terms of numbers, it could still adversely affect specific industries and create uncertainty among business owners.

The retaliatory measures taken by the White House, which included bans and increased tariffs on various items like mattresses and paper products, are estimated to affect around $3 billion worth of Canadian goods, with removed tariffs amounting to approximately $2 billion. Despite Canada’s substantial $527 billion worth of goods exported to the U.S. in 2025, the impact of these new measures is considered marginal.

According to Derek Holt, vice president at Scotiabank, the bans on dairy, motorcycles, and alcohol are unlikely to have a substantial effect due to the relatively low quantities of these products exported to the U.S. For instance, alcohol exports, the highest among the three categories, were valued at $550 million last year, with the bans only affecting around $700 million worth of exports to the U.S.

The Chief Economist at BMO, Doug Porter, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the total value of newly tariffed items and those removed from the list amounts to approximately $2 billion, leaving the country in a similar economic position as before the announcement. However, specific industries and regions may still feel the brunt of these tariffs, impacting business owners significantly.

While the tariffs may not have a drastic numerical impact, Tu Nguyen, an economist at RSM Canada, emphasizes that the real consequences lie in the message they convey to business owners. The sudden escalation to bans rather than percentage increases in tariffs signals a shift in strategy and could dent business confidence on both sides of the border. The uncertainty created by these trade measures, especially with the swift enforcement timelines, adds another layer of concern for businesses as they navigate the evolving trade landscape.
