Gang Raid Leaves 47 Dead in Haiti Outskirts

Published on

At least 47 individuals lost their lives, and 22 others sustained injuries during a violent incursion by a gang in a neighborhood overlooking Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti noted that the casualty figures might change as more information becomes available.

Jean Massillon, the mayor of Kenscoff, disclosed that armed assailants launched an assault on the community late Sunday, resulting in the destruction of homes and the tragic deaths of residents. Over the past year, this hillside community, which overlooks key routes into the capital, has endured multiple attacks by armed groups, compelling thousands to abandon their residences.

Despite international efforts to bolster Haiti’s under-equipped police force, potent criminal factions operating under a broad coalition have solidified their control over the capital and neighboring areas. Following the latest deadly attack, which the Haitian government condemned as “heinous,” residents expressed outrage over the perceived failure of local law enforcement to safeguard the community.

In response to the escalating violence, demands arose for the resignation of the local police chief. Assurances from the prime minister’s office via social media pledged the restoration of government authority in Kenscoff without delay.

Witnesses in Kenscoff recounted scenes of devastation and grief as survivors discovered the lifeless bodies of loved ones strewn across the streets. Residents lamented the lack of adequate security measures that could have potentially averted the tragedy. The aftermath of the attack left families shattered, with some individuals reporting significant losses and others still unaccounted for.

The assault was attributed to members of Viv Ansanm, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Gang-related violence, particularly targeting Kenscoff, has contributed to the displacement of approximately 1.5 million Haitians. The situation has resulted in a staggering death toll and a significant number of injuries, according to UN data.

The recent attack occurred shortly after the United States deported over 160 individuals to Haiti, following the termination of temporary protected status (TPS) for certain Haitian nationals. Amid these challenges, Haiti is preparing for general elections scheduled for December 13, with concerns raised about the feasibility of conducting safe and fair elections in the current volatile environment.
