President Trump’s executive order, issued in March, directs the administration to compile lists of eligible voters and instructs the U.S. Postal Service to only distribute mail ballots to individuals on those lists. Although a separate injunction preventing the postal service from implementing these changes is still in place, the administration has requested the removal of this hold and has introduced new regulations set to take effect pending legal clearance. These regulations mandate specific envelope formatting for mail ballots and require states to use an electronic system to communicate mail voting information to the postal service, with non-compliant states at risk of not having their mail ballots sent out.

Amidst these developments, concerns have been raised by election officials regarding the feasibility of complying with the new rules, given the decentralized nature of U.S. elections and the lack of prior precedent for such procedures. The Trump administration’s previous actions, including dismantling the Federal Election Assistance Commission earlier this year, have added to the challenges faced by election officials across the country. Despite the ongoing efforts of the White House to enact voting reforms, previous setbacks and legal obstacles have hindered their progress. Trump’s stance on mail-in voting, which he claims is vulnerable to fraud, has further intensified partisan divisions on the issue, with Democrats increasingly embracing mail voting compared to Republicans.

While allegations of voter fraud exist, they are typically isolated incidents, and there is no substantial evidence to support claims of widespread manipulation in the electoral process.
