NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, born in Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. The OHL has expressed its support and well wishes for the 21-year-old Mayich.

Having been drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues, Mayich previously played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL reported that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.

Responding to inquiries, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, acknowledged that a member of the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university declined to disclose the student’s identity, stating that an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.

Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, released a statement expressing the organization’s support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery and well-being during his medical treatment in Arizona. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also conveyed similar sentiments, extending thoughts and support to Mayich, his family, and loved ones.

The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he joined the 67’s in 2021 and when he was selected by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies noted his long-standing involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
