A 15-year-old named Finn Holland, who has a passion for animals, took action when he discovered a shark stranded on a beach near his residence in Maces Bay, a coastal community in southern New Brunswick. With his family, Finn drove to the beach and found the shark in distress but showing signs of life. Despite the shark’s size and weight—measuring about two meters long and weighing around 70 kilograms—Finn decided to help it back into the water, successfully guiding it to safety.

Finn expressed his initial hesitation due to the shark’s size, describing the experience as fascinating. His mother, Jill Holland, mentioned that it was typical of Finn to act without hesitation in such situations, showcasing his caring nature. The Hollands, who have lived in the area for over a decade, were surprised by the shark’s presence as they had never encountered sharks in the vicinity before.

According to shark expert Neil Hammerschlag, the sighting of the porbeagle shark in shallow water is uncommon. He explained that porbeagles possess the ability to regulate their body temperature, allowing them to navigate cooler waters found in regions like Atlantic Canada and New England. However, the shark’s appearance in shallow waters raised concerns of potential distress, possibly due to illness or prior interactions with fishing gear.

Hammerschlag emphasized the declining population of porbeagle sharks due to overfishing, making such encounters increasingly rare. Despite being classified as endangered by the Advisory Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, the federal government has not taken protective measures for the species. Finn expressed gratitude for the community’s support following the rescue, highlighting the rewarding feeling of helping animals in need.
