Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently shared in an interview how her initial doubts about the success of her book “The Gruffalo” were surpassed by its unexpected popularity. Donaldson expressed surprise at the book’s trajectory, as it was originally perceived as too dark for children’s literature and featured unconventional rhyming storytelling for its time.

Fast forward 26 years, Donaldson, alongside illustrator Axel Scheffler, has released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the Gruffalo series. The book introduces the character of Gruffalo Granny, known for her enormous appetite, as she visits the original Gruffalo and his child for a feast. Donaldson remarked that the writing process for “Gruffalo Granny” mirrored her approach to “The Gruffalo,” focusing on crafting a compelling narrative without overthinking the audience reception.

Despite Donaldson hinting that “Gruffalo Granny” might be the final installment in the series, the book’s launch and promotion have been met with immense success. Following a grand unveiling at the British Library, the book quickly became the best-selling title in the UK in 2026 across all genres and age groups. With over 227,000 copies sold in just three days, “Gruffalo Granny” has set a new record as the fastest-selling picture book in the UK.

Reflecting on the enduring charm of the Gruffalo universe, Macmillan Children’s Books’ managing director, Alison Ruane, praised the continued appeal of Donaldson and Scheffler’s creations. The reception of “Gruffalo Granny” has seen a multigenerational audience, with adults who grew up with the original Gruffalo now sharing the story with their children and grandchildren.

While Donaldson indicated that her time with the Gruffalo series might conclude with “Gruffalo Granny,” she assured fans of her ongoing commitment to children’s literature. Her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea and their global journey, is set to be released early next year, showcasing Donaldson’s unique storytelling approach and ability to captivate readers of all ages.
