Germany Shuts Russian Consulates Over Drone Attack

Published on

The German government accused Russia of an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, involving explosives. As a response, Germany announced the closure of a Russian consulate and other measures. The drone, discovered near a Ukrainian plane on Aug. 4, was defused, causing concern among officials. Western authorities have long criticized Moscow for engaging in disruptive activities across Europe to weaken support for Ukraine and destabilize European countries.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted that elements found in the drone attack were consistent with Russian tactics seen in conflicts with Ukraine. Dobrindt emphasized the meticulous planning and technical sophistication involved, suggesting the involvement of lower-level operatives in executing the plan.

Authorities in Berlin pointed to evidence linking the attack to individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities. The closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin were announced, signaling a strained bilateral relationship. Germany also plans to propose more Russian individuals for EU sanctions, intensify entry controls, and target vessels suspected of violating sanctions by transporting Russian oil.

Despite German allegations, Russian officials denied involvement in the drone attack, dismissing them as a pretext to escalate tensions. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Germany of diverting attention from internal issues and lacking evidence to support their claims. The incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport follows past security breaches, including a 2024 incident involving a fire at a logistics center suspected to be orchestrated by Russian intelligence.

Amid increased scrutiny of Russian activities, the European Union has imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine. NATO expressed solidarity with Germany following the drone attack, with allies reaffirming support for Ukraine. As tensions escalate, global attention remains focused on Russia’s actions and potential threats to European security.
