The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections from a significant report dating back to September 1986 that was prepared for a federal commission of inquiry focusing on war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent public decision, has instructed the government to unveil redacted segments of the study concerning the post-Second World War resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada.
B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for the publication of more content from the report authored by researcher Alti Rodal. Notably, in February 2024, Library and Archives Canada released some additional excerpts from the report following an access to information request by B’nai Brith. However, certain sections, including those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the integration of Nazi collaborators into Canada, have still been withheld by Library and Archives.
In his verdict, Justice Fothergill dismissed the government’s claim that revealing specific information could have adverse effects on Canada’s international relations.
