Top-ranked Canada secured their spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after defeating the host Dominican Republic in the championship match of the women’s volleyball NORCECA Continental Qualifier. The Canadian team, led by coach Giovanni Guidetti and assistants Carolyn O’Dwyer, Vincenzo Mallia, and TJ Sanders, clinched the victory in four games against the fourth-ranked Dominican Republic team with a score of 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14. This win marked Canada’s fourth Olympic appearance and their first since the 1996 Atlanta Games, where they tied for ninth place.
Alexa Gray, a team member since 2017, expressed her elation at the victory, emphasizing how much it meant to her and the team. Gray, along with Kiera Van Ryk, led Canada’s scoring efforts with 22 points each. Despite a strong performance by the Dominican Republic, Canada dominated in attack points, blocks, and aces, though they did commit more errors.
Setter Brie Fransen commended the team’s hard work, describing the feeling of qualifying for the Olympics as surreal and rewarding. Prior to earning the Olympic spot, Canada had already claimed their first-ever NORCECA Continental Championship by defeating the American team in the final match. Coach Guidetti praised the team’s dedication and success in achieving their goals of making it to the VNL finals and securing a place in the upcoming Olympics.
