“Bison Road Collisions Drop in N.W.T. after Wildfires”

Published on

The N.W.T. Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) has observed a decrease in the number of bison involved in road accidents. Between 2021 and 2025, there were 60 reported collisions with bison, but in 2026, only one incident has been recorded. Bison ecologist Terry Armstrong credits this decline to the impact of wildfires on bison behavior.

Armstrong explains that wildfires prompt bison to alter their movements, with the animals being attracted to recently burned areas and the fresh vegetation sprouting there. This change in habitat preference has led to a shift in bison away from roadsides towards post-fire zones, resulting in a reduction in collisions.

Wood bison, classified as a threatened species locally and nationally, have an estimated population of over 2,500 according to ECC figures, although Armstrong suggests the actual number may be higher. Unfortunately, between 2021 and 2025, 76 bison lost their lives due to collisions, with Highway 3 being a hotspot for such incidents.

During the mating season from August to September, bison exhibit more aggressive behavior, especially along roadways. Armstrong warns of potential dangers during this period, emphasizing the importance of cautious driving due to reduced visibility, particularly at dawn and dusk. He advises drivers to drive slowly, maintain distance from bison, and avoid actions that could startle them, as male bison engaged in mating rituals may be more prone to aggression.

Furthermore, Armstrong highlights the significance of staying inside vehicles and refraining from attempting to interact with bison, emphasizing their status as North America’s largest land mammal and emphasizing the need to respect their space and behavior patterns.
