John Albert (Buck) Martinez, a cancer survivor and a prominent figure in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster spanning five decades, was inducted into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence. The Blue Jays introduced this section as part of their 50th season festivities to pay tribute to key contributors to the franchise. The Hall of Excellence, situated on the concourse behind right field at Rogers Centre, honored 11 individuals previously recognized in the Level of Excellence.
During a pre-game ceremony before the Blue Jays’ match against the Seattle Mariners, the 77-year-old Martinez expressed his gratitude for the honor, acknowledging the overwhelming support he has received from fans across Canada during his extensive tenure as a broadcaster. Martinez was humbled by the recognition, particularly when fellow Blue Jays enthusiast Brett Bateman approached him to convey his appreciation for Martinez’s impact on the team and its followers.
Recalling a recent encounter in England, Martinez shared a heartwarming story of how Canadian fans proudly identify themselves by their hometowns when expressing their admiration for the Blue Jays. Martinez emphasized the profound connection the team has fostered with fans nationwide.
Among the distinguished members of the Hall of Excellence are notable figures such as Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, and others who have left an indelible mark on the Blue Jays organization. The Level of Excellence will continue to be displayed within the stadium bowl for the remainder of the current season before being relocated to a more prominent location next year.
Martinez, who resides in Florida but flew to Toronto for the induction ceremony, was accompanied by several Blue Jays legends, including Cito Gaston and Jose Bautista. Reflecting on Martinez’s impact, former teammate Dave Stieb commended Martinez for his supportive role and calming influence during intense moments on the field.
The Blue Jays intend for the Hall of Excellence to serve as a platform to honor various individuals who have shaped the team’s legacy, including players, coaches, managers, builders, and broadcasters from past to present, fostering a closer connection between fans and the team’s heritage.
Martinez’s association with the Blue Jays dates back to his playing days as a catcher and manager, followed by his successful broadcasting career covering over 4,000 games for the team. His final broadcast appearance coincided with the World Series last year, where he provided commentary alongside Dan Shulman. Martinez’s contributions to baseball in Canada were further recognized when he received the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.
