“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” Revives Classic Monster-Fighting Action

Published on

A classic game from 1986, “Castlevania,” was known for its monster-fighting action, challenging gameplay, and catchy soundtrack on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Despite its rich history with numerous sequels and spinoffs, the series has been dormant since 2014, leaving fans craving for more.

“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” is set to reignite interest among both new and seasoned fans by drawing inspiration from various chapters in the series’ past and indie games influenced by it. The game combines traditional 2D exploration with stunning visual design, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience, although its high level of difficulty might be daunting for newcomers.

The storyline of “Belmont’s Curse” follows Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, iconic characters from “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse,” as she embarks on a quest in 1499 Paris amidst a monster invasion. Rose grapples with a curse inherited from her mother, adding a layer of complexity to her journey, which unfolds through a mix of familiar and unexpected elements from the series.

The gameplay mirrors the beloved 1997 title “Symphony of the Night,” incorporating exploration elements akin to Metroid and Zelda games. Players guide Rose through intricate locations like eerie cemeteries and treacherous clock towers, unlocking new abilities to navigate obstacles and defeat foes. The game’s challenging combat mechanics demand quick reflexes and strategic thinking, offering a rewarding yet punishing experience for players.

While the intricate level design and captivating visuals enhance the game’s atmosphere, the need for extensive backtracking and limited save points may frustrate some players. Despite these drawbacks, the impressive art direction and dynamic soundtrack elevate the overall experience, immersing players in a vibrant world filled with danger and mystery.

However, the Nintendo Switch version of the game faced performance issues during the review period, including low-resolution graphics, extended load times, and input lag, affecting gameplay quality. On the Xbox Series X, the game ran smoother and more responsive, indicating potential optimization concerns that may be addressed in future updates across all platforms.
