“Keir Starmer Pledges Uncompromised Support for Hillsborough Bill”

Published on

Keir Starmer assured Hillsborough families today that he will uphold a groundbreaking new bill aimed at preventing future state cover-ups. The Prime Minister met with campaigners, including Margaret Aspinall, whose son was among the 97 victims of the tragedy, outside Downing Street. He pledged that the proposed legislation, which could hold public officials accountable for dishonesty, will not be weakened during its passage through Parliament.

Following the meeting, Starmer emphasized the importance of the law, stating that despite challenges, they have persevered to ensure it meets the families’ expectations without compromise. He reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the law promptly to address the families’ concerns.

The families of the 97 Liverpool fans who lost their lives at the Hillsborough stadium in 1989 have fought for justice for decades. Starmer’s initial promise to publish the bill by the tragedy’s 36th anniversary in April was fulfilled, underscoring his dedication to the cause.

Margaret Aspinall expressed hope that the new legislation will prevent others from enduring similar suffering. She emphasized that the law serves as a legacy not only for the victims but for the entire nation.

The Prime Minister praised the Hillsborough campaigners for their courage, acknowledging their profound impact on exposing injustices and setting a precedent for future accountability. The government clarified that the bill includes a legal duty of candour, ensuring public officials operate with transparency and could face legal consequences for breaching this duty.

Sue Roberts, who lost her brother in the tragedy, hailed the significant progress achieved, noting the resolution of legal concerns and the government’s commitment to advancing the legislation.

The efforts of the Hillsborough families have resonated beyond their immediate circle, inspiring change and accountability for generations to come.
