The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is in the process of issuing final notifications to individuals receiving benefits who are transitioning to Universal Credit this month.

Universal Credit has now taken over the majority of previous benefits for many households in the UK, including Tax Credits, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, and Housing Benefit.

There are still individuals receiving income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) who will be shifted to Universal Credit, with all remaining beneficiaries expected to be contacted by the conclusion of September 2025.

The DWP aims to finalize the “managed migration” process of transferring everyone to Universal Credit by March 2026. If you have not transitioned yet, you will receive a “migration notice” via mail.

This will provide a three-month timeframe to transition to Universal Credit; after this period, your current benefits will cease.

The DWP asserts that 55% of individuals will benefit from Universal Credit, while 35% may experience a decrease in income. For those facing a reduction, monthly transition payments will be provided to cover the shortfall.

The transitional protection remains in place until the Universal Credit amount aligns with the previous benefits received under legacy systems.

However, individuals are eligible for these transitional payments only if they wait for the “managed migration” process to transition them.
