A 25-year-old man named Hamza Smajlovic has received a life sentence for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother and injuring her father. The incident took place in Des Moines, Iowa, where Smajlovic had previously assaulted his ex-girlfriend, Jasmyn Robison. Following this, Jasmyn decided to end their relationship, prompting her parents, Tony and Ruth Robison, to assist her in moving out of their home.
Tragically, during the moving process on November 1, 2024, Smajlovic shot both parents. The mother, Ruth Robison, aged 45, lost her life in the attack, while Mr. Robison sustained critical injuries after being shot in the head. At his sentencing, Smajlovic admitted to shooting both victims with a 9-millimeter gun.
During the sentencing hearing, Jasmyn and other members of the Robison family spoke about the devastating impact of the incident. Describing her mother as a hero, Jasmyn expressed the irreplaceable loss of her time with her mother. It was revealed that Jasmyn had not disclosed the full extent of the abuse she endured until she made the decision to leave.
In a poignant moment, Tony Robison shared a heartfelt poem written by his daughter, Chayse, honoring Ruth’s memory. Smajlovic was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 25 years for the shooting. The judge emphasized the gravity of Smajlovic’s actions, calling them separate attempts to take the lives of two individuals needlessly. The judge highlighted the profound impact of the incident on the Robison family and underscored the significance of the consecutive sentences imposed on Smajlovic.
