Iconic BBC Radio 2 host Brian Hayes has passed away at 87 after a distinguished career spanning over five decades, with tributes pouring in swiftly.

Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, Hayes, the son of a miner, was renowned for his influential radio work, emphasizing genuine interactions with callers.

After relocating from Australia to the UK in the early 70s, Hayes initially worked as a producer at Capital Radio before transitioning to a presenting role. He gained recognition for his assertive style on the morning interview and phone-in show at LBC radio.

Known for his straightforward manner with callers, Hayes earned respect despite his controversial approach, earning him the nickname ‘Brian Bastard’ from Private Eye magazine.

Throughout the 90s, Hayes hosted the BBC Radio 2 show “Hayes over Britain,” winning a Gold Sony Radio Award for ‘Best Phone-In.’ He also filled in for notable hosts like Jimmy Young and Jeremy Vine until 2006.

Hayes’s radio journey extended to BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 4, where he contributed to various programs. Reflecting on his time at LBC, he fondly recollected memorable interviews with prominent figures and the eclectic mix of Londoners sharing their views on societal organization.

His legacy in broadcasting includes a notable interview with then opposition leader Margaret Thatcher on LBC, marking the beginning of his impactful career in radio.
