Ed Sheeran has clarified the status of his friendship with Taylor Swift following rumors of a rift between them. The 34-year-old singer, known for hits like “Shivers,” has been close friends with the 35-year-old pop star for many years, with Taylor even referring to Ed as her ‘second brother.’
Speculations arose when Ed, who doesn’t own a mobile phone, revealed that he learned about Taylor’s wedding to Travis Kelce only after she shared the news on Instagram. Additionally, there were concerns that Taylor released her album, “The Life Of A Showgirl,” shortly after Ed’s own album, “Play.”
A music industry insider mentioned, “Ed is very meticulous about planning his album launches. While he announced his album four months in advance, Taylor announced hers just two weeks before the release date.” This left Ed’s team scrambling to garner attention before Taylor’s album dropped, leading to Ed feeling slighted and understandably annoyed, as reported by the Mail.
Nevertheless, the “Shape of You” artist has now confirmed that he and Taylor are still close friends. He disclosed that he had a conversation with Taylor a week after she got engaged, emphasizing that their bond remains strong.
“I don’t feel self-conscious about our relationship,” Ed shared with Access Hollywood. “We’ve been friends for a long time. We have a strong connection, and whenever we meet, we effortlessly pick up where we left off.”
Reflecting on his delayed knowledge of Taylor’s wedding and his absence from the mobile phone world dominated by social media, he expressed, “I believe that constant digital connection can sometimes hinder real human interaction.”
In a 2023 interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Ed praised Taylor as one of the few people who truly understands him. He described their lengthy conversations as therapeutic, highlighting the depth of their friendship.
