A man has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for brutally attacking a disabled man by stubbing a cigarette in his eye, an incident captured on CCTV footage. The attack occurred in a Nottinghamshire pub’s beer garden where the victim, on a mobility scooter, was assaulted by David Brown. Pubgoers had to intervene to stop the assault, which caused severe injuries to the victim’s right eye. Nottinghamshire Police responded to the scene at a pub in South Street, Hucknall, on December 29, 2023, leading to Brown’s immediate arrest.
Despite denying the charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, Brown was found guilty after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in October. The victim continues to experience vision problems nearly two years later, necessitating frequent hospital visits.
PC Oskar Sereda stated that the attack, though believed to stem from a previous dispute over money between Brown and the victim, was unprovoked and occurred as soon as the victim entered the pub. The emotional and physical toll on the victim has been significant, with lasting impacts on his well-being. The victim now feels unsafe in Hucknall, and his parents have faced financial strain from taking time off work to care for him.
PC Sereda expressed gratitude to the individuals at the pub who intervened and restrained Brown before the police arrived.
