Sky and Virgin Media TV users will see a reduction in available channels starting tomorrow, including popular music services. The decision to remove several MTV stations was initially announced in October, and now viewers have just 24 hours left to enjoy these iconic channels. The updated TV listings confirm that MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will all stop broadcasting on December 31.
When attempting to check upcoming programs on these platforms using the TV planner, users are greeted with a message stating, “This channel is now closed.”
The shift towards streaming platforms is cited as the reason behind this change, with fewer viewers opting for traditional TV to consume music content. Many now prefer platforms like YouTube or social apps such as TikTok for their music needs.
A source speaking to The Sun mentioned that MTV has become a victim of the rising popularity of streaming services. The source expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s a dark day for the music industry. MTV, once a dominant force, now pales in comparison to its former self.”
Reports suggest that MTV services in certain regions like Asia, Australia, and Latin America are also facing discontinuation.
While the music-focused channels are being discontinued, MTV HD will continue to be available, featuring reality programs like Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.
MTV has played a significant role in shaping youth culture and launching music and television careers for decades. Since its inception in 1981, the channel revolutionized the music consumption, marketing, and visualization landscape.
In addition to MTV, four children’s TV channels, namely Pop, Tiny Pop, Pop+1, and Tiny Pop+1, will also be permanently removed from the listings by the end of the year.
In total, nine channels will no longer be accessible on Sky and Virgin Media TV platforms.
